Fiction Terms
1. Character - A person or an animal in a story, play, or other literary work.
2. Characterization - The way in which the writer reveals the personality of the character.
3. Setting - The time and place of a story, play or poem.
4. Plot - The series of related events that make up a story.
5. Point of view- The vantage point from which the story is told.
A. 1st person point of view - One of the characters in the story tells it using personal pronouns I, me and my.
B. 3rd person point of view - A narrator tells the story using 3rd person pronouns, he, she, and they.
C. Omniscient point of view - This is called the all-knowing point of view because the narrator knows everything about the characters and their problems.
6. Tone - the attitude that a writer takes toward an audience, a subject, or a character.
7. Theme - An idea about life revealed in a work of literature.
8. Short story- A fictional prose narrative that is from about five pages to 20 pages long.
9. Prose - any writing that is not poetry.
10. Conflict - A struggle or clash between opposing characters or opposing forces.
11. Internal conflict - Struggle between opposing desires or emotions within a person.
12. External conflict - A struggle between a character and some outside force.
13. Main idea- The most important idea expressed in a piece of writing.
14. Fiction - A prose account that is made up rather than true.
15. Novel - A fictional story that is usually between one hundred and five hundred book pages long.
16. Fairy tale -A fictional short story that has royalty for characters and wizards and witches casting spells. Good usually wins over evil.
17. Protagonist - The main character in a story of fiction.
18. Antagonist - the character or force against the protagonist.
19. Exposition-1st part of the plot where author introduces the setting, characters, and conflict.
20. Rising Action-2nd part of the plot where author gives more details about the conflict and obstacles the main character must overcome.
21. Climax-The highest level of action in a story of fiction.
22. Falling Action - The 4th part of the plot where the action is winding down.
23. Resolution- The end of the story, and conflict is resolved.

1st - Exposition is where the author introduces the characters, setting and basic problem.
2nd - Rising Action is the complications that arise as the characters take steps to resolve the conflict.
3rd - Climax is the most exciting part of the story. The outcome of the conflict is decided one way or another.
4th - Falling Action is where the action is winding down from the climax and moving toward the end.
5th - Resolution is when the characters problems are solved and the story ends.

Figurative Language Terms -
1. Simile - Comparison of 2 different things using like or as.
Example: Her hair was as yellow as corn.
2. Metaphor- Comparison of two different things where 1 thing is stated as the other.
Example: Kenny's room is a pigsty.
3. Alliteration- Repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of words in a sentence.
Example: The busy beaver built his dam by the big brown barn.
4. Hyperbole - An extravagant exaggeration.
Example: James is taller than a skyscraper.
5. Onomatopoeia - Words whose sound suggests their meaning.
Example: The buzzing in the bee's nest made me nervous.
6. Personification- Non-human items have human traits.
Example: The sun smiled down at me while I was at the beach.
